Embarking on a Knitting Journey with Leftover Yarn!
So, about a fortnight ago, I was sifting through my myriad yarn remnants. It hit me – why not breathe new life into them? With that thought, I set out to craft some delightful knitted cushion covers, complementing the blanket I’d recently finished. The end product? A snuggly addition to our sofa, perfect for the chilly months ahead!
Let’s Knit Some Cushion Covers!
Materials:
- 200g double knitting yarn (colors of your preference)
- 5mm knitting needles
- Yarn needle
- Cushion pad (45cm x 35cm) or your preferred stuffing. I tried batting remnants, although I’d have loved a bit more firmness.
Directions:
Opting for a single-colored design? Here’s how it’ll appear:
But, if you’re playing with multiple colors, stripes might be a fun idea! Just ensure the yarn change happens at the row’s start and there’s ample yarn for an entire row – trust me, knots midway aren’t a good look.
Eyeing identical strips on both sides? Knit the two parts such that upon folding, the shades align. For this, just flip the pattern for the latter half.
Alright, time to get those needles moving!
- Cast on 74 sts.
- K 9 rows for that lovely border.
- Pattern work:
- Rows 1-8: Starting with a k row, work through 8 rows of stocking stitch.
- Rows 9-16: Start with a p row and indulge in 8 rows of reverse stocking stitch.
This 16-row pattern is your base. Do this 9 more times!
- Follow with a k row for 8 rows in the stocking stitch.
- Then, begin with a p row for 7 rows in reverse stocking stitch.
- Time to cast off!
Finishing Touches:
Lay your knitting piece flat, right side up. Fold the top and then the bottom, ensuring the patterns on the side seams align. Secure the sides and pass through all three layers where they overlap. Flip to the right side, insert your cushion pad and add a running stitch row above the starting edge. Voilà!
For my piece, I knitted identical halves, folded it, ensuring the color bands coincided. I used batting as stuffing, although in hindsight, foam might have been plushier. But, hey, it sure looks inviting paired with my earlier blanket. And the matching yarns? Just adds to the charm!
