Dive into the World of Knitted Leg Warmers!

how-to-make-leg-warmers

Want to know how to make leg warmers? Well, there are a couple of methods to choose from! You can either cut and sew a stretchy fabric, or – my personal favorite – knit a cozy pair that gives you that extra warmth. Especially for those ballet classes or workouts!

Leg Warmer Knitting Pattern

Ready to embark on a ribbed leg warmer adventure? Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Materials: 2 x 50g balls of felted tweed yarn
  • Needles: 3.75mm knitting needles OR a 3.75mm 30cm-long circular needle
  • Extras: Ring marker for circular knitting & Yarn Needle

Size: Customizable! But a good measure is 21cm in circumference and 36cm in length.

Tension: 38 sts and 32 rows = 10cm in a 2×2 ribbed pattern.

Knitting Abbreviations

No worries if you’re unfamiliar with knitting lingo, there’s a handy list of abbreviations available!

Method 1: Knitting with Straight Needles

  1. Use 3.75mm needles to cast on 82 sts.
  2. Rib Row 1: Start with P2, then alternate with *k2, p2* until the end.
  3. Rib Row 2: Begin with K2, and then *P2, K2* until the end.
  4. Repeat the two rib rows until you achieve your desired length (36cm is a suggestion).
  5. Cast off while maintaining the rib pattern.
  6. Join the sides to create the seam and neatly tuck in the ends.
  7. And voila! Make another leg warmer just like the first.

Method 2: Knitting with Circular Needle

  1. Use the 3.75mm circular needle to cast on 80 sts. Place a marker on the right needle and join the round without twisting your stitches.
  2. Rib Round: Follow the pattern *K2, p2* until the end of the round.
  3. Keep repeating the rib round, always slipping the marker, until you reach about 18cm.
  4. Remove your marker and cast off in rib pattern.
  5. Finish off by sewing in the ends.
  6. Now, knit another one to complete the pair!

Pro Tip: You can use five double-pointed knitting needles too! Distribute 80 stitches among four needles (20 stitches per needle). Use the fifth one to start your knitting, and don’t forget to mark the beginning of each round.
